I used to think it horrible that a person could lose their life from commiting a crime such as stealing but last night while walking home we came across a huge house on fire. It is where a lot of the chineese people here live. It was burning and the people where desperatly trying to save what was left in the house and the store in front. When I watched some tongan kids start stealing their stuff. Looting a burning house, taking what little these people could salvage.
It was the most vile thing I have ever witnessed, I was apalled, the sheer lack of humanity of these people was overwhelming.
The guy I was with confronted them and actualy guilted one of them to put some of it back,. Thats the problem with morality, it only works when soemone is watching. I now see why people string people up on polls for looting. If I was able to I would have done that to these boys that night.
The sad thing is I am sure they will all be in church sunday pretending to be pious while in their minds and hearts they are filth not worthy of even contempt.
It also shows the feeligns of the tongans to the chineese here. I am not sure why they dislike the people who work and run all the small stores and don't seem to bother anyone. maybe it is because they aren't christian. I am not sure.
I think I have seen what is the basest in humans last night but also thanks to my companion what is the best.
I guess thats what the world is, a battle between those who wish things to be just and those who just wish to get away with whatever they can
