2004-04-05 - 7:50 p.m. This week past has been one of the best I have had on the island so far. Every year around this time all the school kids compete in a large sporting even held in tongatapu. All the events are track and field and all the schools sit together and cheer for their classmates and against the other schools. Since they spend about 20 hours a day singing their cheers were quite well done though they seem to like to call each other fruit which I don't understand as of yet. =) For most of these kids, especialy those on the outer islands, this will probably be the most people they will ever see at once and definiatly compete in front of. The whole setup was that of a county fair, vendors on the outside of the stands selling everything. Unlike the US there you could buy eggs and ramen noodles and everything in between. The weather was also much cooler and basicaly sunny the whole time making the event even easier to sit and watch for long periods. all in all it was the most enjoyable time I have spent in Tonga.
